Preston’s first novel, Perhaps She’ll Die, was also an Oklahoma Book Award finalist, as well as a finalist for the Redmond Barry, Macavity, and Mary Higgins Clark Awards. This engaging second novel is also set in the fictional town of Tetumka, Oklahoma, where protagonist and amateur sleuth Chantalene Morrell becomes embroiled in a decades-old mystery. Preston lives in Edmond, where she edits and publishes ByLine, a nationally distributed trade magazine for writers. Thelma Patterson had given up on ever seeing her husband again, who disapppeared some thirty years before. That is, until a handsome cowboy claiming to be him strides into their small town of Tetumka, Oklahoma - and soon moves back in with his deserted wife. When Thelma starts to question the identity of the man sharing her bed, she turns to Chantalene and Drew, who investigate and become fearful for Thelma's life.

Soon after a woman asks to have her long-gone husband declared dead, the man turns up. When Chantalene Morrell, who works for her boyfriend in a rural Oklahoma law office, investigates, it's not long before the prodigal husband is found dead. It takes a while for M.K. Preston to get to the mystery, and that's okay since it gives Beth Richmond the chance to develop a small town full of interesting, sympathetic characters. The male voices may have a little too much swagger, but Richmond invests them with personality as she draws listeners into the mystery. Richmond's injection of heart makes the novel's action scenes gripping. J.A.S. (c) AudioFile 2009, Portland, Maine
