It's 1968, London is in full swing, and the Savoy Hotel is at the height of its legendary glitz and glamour, welcoming the rich, famous, and aristocratic into its rarified world of perfection. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton are squabbling in the American Bar while Noël Coward drinks champagne. Royals wait upstairs in luxurious suites for discreet encounters. All is as it should be at the Savoy. If only it weren't for the dead body in Room 705. Could it be murder? Impossible! Who could have done such a thing? Suspicion falls upon Priscilla Tempest, the quick-witted Canadian head of the Savoy press office who has a penchant for champagne, the wrong sort of men—and trouble. When it is discovered that Priscilla had been with the deceased—a notorious international arms dealer—the night before he was found dead, she is questioned by Scotland Yard Inspector Robert "Charger" Lightfoot and is suddenly under the unforgiving eye of her boss, the Savoy's straitlaced general manager, Clive Banville. With her job on the line and her life in danger, Priscilla must elude the police and the general manager's duplicitous wife, ward off the amorous advances of a famous drunken actor, and discover whether that really was a member of the royal family seen leaving the victim's suite shortly before his body was discovered.

Set in swinging 1968 London, this entertaining series launch from Emery (Nanaimo Girl, a memoir) and Base (Magic Man) opens with a maid finding the body of international arms dealer Amir Abraham in his suite at the upscale Savoy Hotel. Suspicion falls on the hotel’s 20-something press officer, Priscilla Tempest, who had gone to the opera with the victim and accompanied him to his room. After Priscilla is connected to the subsequent death of a Member of Parliament at the hotel, she sets out to try to uncover the truth about the incidents. Meanwhile, Priscilla’s boss summons her to a meeting, where she fears he’s going to fire her, but instead he asks her to take care of his mother-in-law, who’s visiting from New York City. Celebrity cameos, including those of Bob Hope, Noël Coward, and Princess Margaret, who may have had a tryst with Mr. Abraham, enliven the action, and the revelation that a Russian poison was a possible murder weapon raises the stakes. This light, frothy mystery is perfect escapist fare.

The artistic, accomplished voice of Eunice Wong introduces listeners to the glamorous world of the stately Savoy Hotel in London, its famous guests, and backstairs shenanigans. In 1968, Priscilla Tempest, a mini- skirt-clad young Canadian, is employed as head of the press office for the Savoy Hotel. Wong gives her a clear, pleasant voice that is distinct from the voices of her English co-workers. Wong portrays guests, employees, spies, and murder victims in a subtle, wholly believable fashion. While this story is technically a murder mystery, listeners will spend more time spying on the rich, royal, and famous than pondering suspects. This is the first novel in a new series. Let's hope they are all as effervescent and fun as this one. D.L.G. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine

While the company line may be "there are no secrets at the Savoy," Priscilla Tempest is finding quite the opposite. Though she adores her job in the press office of the swanky London hotel, her penchant for flirting and frivolity comes back to haunt her when one of her mysterious male companions is found dead in a Savoy suite. Unable to trust anyone, Priscilla must eschew her usual arsenal of come-ons and cocktails and rely on her amateur investigative skills to prove her innocence. Prudence Emery (Nanaimo Girl) and Ron Base ("Sanibel Sunset Detective" series) join forces for this first engaging historical mystery in their "Priscilla Tempest" series. The story line is compelling but filled with lighter elements of comedy and coziness. Narrator Eunice Wong gives unique voice to a diverse cast of characters, both fictional and famous, from Richard Burton to real-life royals. Her anxious air immerses listeners in Priscilla's fraught frame of mind and will have them eager to read future installments. VERDICT This audio will appeal to listeners seeking a swinging '60s historical mystery full of murder and mischief. Recommended for fans of Nicola Upson, Vicki Delany, and Shelley Noble.--Lauren Hackert
