And in this often-shirtless season, which also intersects with Pride, I think often about a favorite poem of mine by Mark Doty, “At the Gym.” In it, the gay writer observes the men who “hoist nothing / that need be lifted / but some burden they’ve chosen.” In this case, it’s “our will to become objects / of desire.”
