EUROPEAN FESTIVAL GUIDE 2023 • The live jazz scene in the UK and Europe is looking good. With the easing of Covid restrictions, the enthusiasm from promoters and artists alike seems to be matched by demand from the audience. Festival organisers are reporting high interest, with a lot of the early bird offers having been snapped up already. There are plenty of big names on tour this summer including John McLaughlin, Wynton and Branford Marsalis, Brad Mehldau and Marcus Miller. Our picks from this year’s offerings have something for everyone – with music on the beach, in the mountains, in historic city centres and in the wilds. As always, lineups, venues and dates may change, and if you want to ensure you have tickets – book early! Tim Dickeson is your guide for a whole year of festival adventures…

The result of this encounter was Shakti, a revolutionary band that melded western and eastern musical traditions to create something completely new. Stuart Nicholson spoke to the guitarist about the group’s incredible history as the band embark on their 50th Anniversary World Tour – and release their first new studio album in 46 years

SHIFTING GEARS • John Escreet’s most recent album, Seismic Shift, represented just that in the UK-born, LA-resident pianist’s musical career and vision, as Nick Hasted discovers
