FROM REFUGEE to OLYMPIAN • Yusra Mardini is an inspiration. At 17, she fled war-torn Syria with her sister, Sara, both swimmers training at the highest level. When the small boat they were on with 18 other refugees broke down in the middle of the Mediterranean, Yusra and Sara jumped into the water and pulled the boat to safety. After reaching European shores and finding refuge in Germany, Yusra went back to training and ended up participating in both the Rio and Tokyo Olympics. The sisters’ story was turned into a Netflix movie, The Swimmers, in 2022 and they were named among Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world in 2023. Here, Yusra shares an update with marie claire.
