MARINE ELECTRIC • Our take on electric boats

Cindy Pease Roe Artist • When she created a sculpture of a leaping tarpon on behalf of sunglasses-maker Costa Del Mar, Cindy Pease Roe really turned heads. She made the sculpture entirely out of trash and plastic debris that she found on beaches in an effort by her and Costa Del Mar to highlight the issue of oceanic pollution. We caught up with Roe to find out more.

STEERING SYSTEM SAFETY • Imagine losing the ability to steer your boat when underway—even worse, at high speed. Your boat’s steering system is one of the most critical on the boat; lose your steering, you lose direction. Loss of steering could be catastrophic. Let’s look at some basic and high-performance steering-system knowledge.

INSIDE THE ISSUE

BOAT-FRIENDLY HATS • The classic baseball-style cap will always be a favorite for both style and sun protection, but it’s not always the ideal choice when out on the water. Typical poly-cotton blends get soaked from water and sweat, take a long time to dry, and often end up stinky and salt-stained. A new generation of cool caps does it better. Here’s how their various features compare.

Though each follows a similar formula—advantageous horsepower-to-weight ratio and near-identical trio of freestyle-oriented add-ons—they retain distinct personalities on the water. Here’s how they compare.

FORMULA 387 CCF • Formula’s first center-console shows a surprising level of fishy sophistication.

COBALT R33 • Cobalt’s R33 carries you and your crew in comfort and style to big-water adventure and fun.

NAVICO FATHOM e-POWER • Fossil-fuel marine generators have long served the AC electrical needs of boaters while away from shore power. But let’s face it, gensets can be finicky, are high-maintenance and smelly, and create intrusive noise and, in some cases, dangerous CO emissions. Navico aims to shift that paradigm with its Fathom e-Power system.
