Boating

June/July 2023
Magazine

Boating is the world's foremost magazine for boating enthusiasts. Written by experts for those who love the sport, the editorial covers the waterfront -- from runabouts to sportfish convertibles to luxury showpieces, and everything in between.

Boating

IT’S WATERSPORTS TIME! • Tow boats meld people and technology like few other boat types.

ON BOARD WITH… Addy White Ocean Artist • I met Addy White during the 2023 Miami International Boat Show, where she had set up a small table in the Suzuki Marine booth to display and sell her handmade necklaces, earrings, rings and bracelets. White custom-crafts each piece from multicolored bits of microplastic trash picked up from beaches near her home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Here’s what she had to say about her work.

INSIDE THE ISSUE

TACTACAM POV CAMERAS • GoPro is the Xerox of POV cameras. It’s ubiquitous, with a name that has become generic for POVs and a price tag that has risen as if it’s the only game in town. But it is not. There are many POV brands, such as Sony, DJI and Nikon, to name a few. In our travels, we came across Tactacam, a brand shouldering its way into the action-cam market through bass fishing tournament anglers and hunting enthusiasts. After looking at Tactacam’s lineup and its economical pricing, we felt it would be a great fit for watersports enthusiasts. Take a look for yourself.

DRIVING FOR WATERSPORTS • What are the odds? It’s our Watersports Issue, and guess what? Here’s a Captain’s Test on watersports towing. Go figure! Let’s dive right in and see if you know how to tow.

MONTARA SURF BOSS 2.0

CANDELA C-8 CC

GEAR HEAD

BROKEN FEMUR AND NO WAY BACK ABOARD • This boater endured injury and pain, and offers a message of wisdom for the rest of us.

BAILING A SEA • Seas grew mean as we neared the end of the 25-mile down-sea run while returning from Southern California’s Catalina Island and approached the entrance to San Pedro’s outer harbor aboard my 21-foot center-console.

GETTING STARTED • Water-skiing, wakesurfing and wakeboarding are all fun way to enjoy a day on the water. The first step, of course, is getting up on your skis, board or wakesurfer. Each sport is unique, but they share certain characteristics. Understanding them will make your starts easy and consistent.

Q&A

WE TEST STUFF

APPLYING SPRAY-ON CERAMIC COATING • Ceramic coating protects your boat’s finish and reduces maintenance.

FLY YOUR WAKE-SURF BOARD TO THE SURFACE LIKE A PRO • How to do a standing start in wakesurfing.

NEW LIFE-JACKET LABELS • Buying a life jacket? You may run across two different types of labels. The big difference? Traditional labels identified the life jacket’s type: I, II, III or V. The newer labels provide a bold number, which indicates its buoyancy in newtons (1 newton is 15.7 pounds). Newtons are used so that life-jacket buyers in Canada, Europe and the US rate life jackets the same way. Find out what other information these new labels tell boating consumers.

12 GADGETS TO IMPROVE YOUR TIME ON THE WATER • We boaters constantly seek ways to make life on the water easier, simpler and more enjoyable. Finding those things in the ever-changing sea of consumer-driven mania can be tough to do. So, we went out searching for you. Here you’ll find an assortment of items, from the high-tech to the simple, that will improve life afloat.

SEA RAY SLX 260 SURF • A luxury bowrider with a surfable wave that simultaneously pleases a family crew and a sports crowd.

PURSUIT S 248 SPORT • Pursuit might call its new S 248 Sport an entry-level boat, but for everyone else, it’s next level.

MANITOU CRUISE 22 MAX SWITCHBACK • Garnering one of Boating’s...
