John Stuart Cowdery 1931-2021

Elections are on the horizon • It has been a busy few weeks with plenty of competitions both home, and abroad. There is news of a get together across the disciplines, and details of how you can attend the AGM and conference in person or online.

Back in action and loving it • As Sandra Fisher reports, the lack of competition practice saw a rusty start to the season, but both drivers and equines made up for this in sheer enthusiasm, as they wowed the crowds across the length and breadth of the country.

Almost like old times… • Jeff Osborne says being back in the ring at the Hickstead Derby was welcomed by one and all. He is also reminding everyone to get their HOYS tickets, for a chance to see the group in action once again.

It’s good to hear the noise! • At last, there is something to shout home about. Carol Davenport reports on recent events, where the crowds were in fine voice, enjoying the thrills and spills of scurry.

Spotlight on Ballyward • Eileen Cornish RDA Carriage Driving Lead, explains how she has been has been putting ponies, drivers, and coaches through their paces on a recent visit to an RDA driving centre in Northern Ireland.

A different venue with plenty to write home about • Time spent away from the show ring, particularly for the young and novice horses and ponies has allowed them to mature, and come into their own.

A guide to traditional style for competition • The Association d’Internationale d’Attelage de Tradition (AIAT) is growing in popularity, if you are thinking of giving it a go, here is a simple step by step guide to all you need to know.

Maintaining end of season performance • Whether turned out 24/7 or for just a few hours of every day, many of us rely on grass to meet at least part of our horses’ nutritional requirements. Emma Short BSc (Hons) from Baileys Horse Feeds looks at getting the balance right throughout the year.

The stuff of dreams • Lester Dagge says the Disney song ‘When you wish upon a star, your dreams come true’ sums up the recent AIAT event at Glamis Castle.

Doyenne of the donkey drivers • Susan Dunne talks to the Chairwoman of the Donkey Breed Society about this versatile equine, and discovers how these intelligent creatures have captured her heart.

All down to the wire • Horse driving trials were back for a third time this year at Ashfields Carriage and Polo club, as they hosted the British Carriagedriving National Championships. Amy Mundell reports on a well contested and attended event.

Kris brings home the gold for Ireland • Amy Mundell travelled to France with the Great Britain junior team, and says following their performance, there is plenty to look forward to in the future.

HOYS here we come! • Susan Dunne catches up with more of this year’s qualifiers with their sights firmly set on HOYS.

Back to the future • The team at Operation Centaur look forward to introducing the newest members of their equine team to a working life in the city.
