New pairings and practice makes perfect runs • Sandra Fisher says a recent practice event provided the chance for new competitors, driving combinations and seasoned campaigners to get together for their first run of the year ahead of the the real thing.

Let the jousting begin • Meeting up for a training weekend ahead of the scurry season provides the opportunity to get back into competition mode, but as Jeff Osborne reports it is also a weekend of catching up with friends, feasting and a good old game of skittles.

Welcome back to the past • The Beamish open-air museum brings history to life from the 1820s through to the 1950s, making it the perfect location for traditional carriages. Last year the museum welcomed carriage drivers for a weekend of competition, Elspeth Ross says following the success of this first event, they have been invited back again this autumn.
